Clichés are writing devices that have long outlived their use-by dates. I like to imagine the first person to come up with a phrase that then became a cliché. When created, the eventual cliché was a witty confection. But after years of tireless overuse, it’s become a smelly, moldy piece of cheese in the English fridge, ripe for you to throw away and never eat again
